During the continuation of general political reflections on Monday in the National Assembly (DNA), VHP parliamentarian Mahinder Jogi opened up the story about the reason why the National Party of Suriname (NPS) led by Gregory Russia left the governing coalition in mid-February 2023. According to Jogi, the NPS was afraid to take responsibility and jumped off the train for populist reasons.

“They should rather remain calm. If your president had created the ministry of oil and gas, you would be good. If you had given the ministry of natural resources to another political party, you would be good. If you had

offered certain people the space to fill more embassy positions, you would be fine. If you had offered certain people the space to fill more supervisory board positions, you would be fine. If you had offered the space to employ 800 more cleaners and gardeners at the Ministry of Education, you would be fine. Let us be fair in this country,” the VHP member emphasized.

According to Jogi, certain people, referring to the NPS, are not ashamed to talk about hopelessness. While the same people have served in the same government for three years.

Russia called this presentation by Jogi a

thoughtless, senseless, cowardly and lying rant. “If we believe that the NPS is being wronged, you can give 20 embassy posts to the NPS. Shove it…keep them, but we're leaving. That's what the NPS is. I have been appointed as a state advisor and there are facilities for a state advisor, but when I did not like it, I also resigned from that position in the middle of that journey. Others would not do that,” said the NPS member.

Russia stated that for the first time in his long political career he has experienced that oral and written agreements have simply been ignored and not fulfilled. And the Green Party cannot accept these things. Moreover, Russia claimed that Jogi is angry with the NPS because the party ensured that the land conversion did not proceed as he wanted.

Russia said in April that President Chan Santokhi had promised the NPS that in addition to two ministerial positions, the party could also fill the directorship at the National Development Bank (NOB) and the ambassadorial position in Belgium. However, after the collaboration was concluded, nothing more came of the posts at the NOB and Belgium.

After yet another suspension, during which Jogi had used expletives outside the microphone during the meeting, acting Assembly Speaker Harriët Ramdien asked members Jogi and Melvin Bouva (NDP) to leave the room. The meeting was then adjourned to today.
